“It takes a village to raise a child” African Proverb
After homeschooling her young family for just over 5yrs, Leah Salmon, the founder of Teaching Our Own, realised that even though all the homeschooler she knew were black, the only homeschooling fair she knew of in the whole of England, was brilliant but not representative of the needs of her African Caribbean homeschooling friends. She also realised that more people were finding that the school system wasn’t the right place for their children and were considering home education, but didn’t know where to start, so she launch Teaching Our Own The Black Homeschooling Fair, onSat 3rd May 2015.
Even though 100 people were expected, on the day over 250 showed up.
The next event was 2 years later, on 10th September 2016 and ever though the venue was bigger, the even attracted over 400 people.
So were back this year!!!

This event is to empower and encourage parents and families of children of African Caribbean descent, to take control over their children’s education, mind and life, by either fully homeschooling them or doing more with their children around their schooling, so that our children’s cultural educational, mental and emotional needs are catered for, because our children’s education has never been the responsibility of the school system, it’s always been ours.
